| Title: Petro-capitalism, Environmental Violence, Youth Identity And The Politics Of Subjectivity In Tanure Ojaides The Activist And Kaine Agarys Yellow-Yellow Author: Julius Nsirim Akani & Freeman Korkara Kobo Abstract: This study examines the interrelationship between This study examines the interrelationship between petro-capitalism, environmental violence, and youth identity formation in Tanure Ojaide’s The Activist (2006) and Kaine Agary’s Yellow-Yellow (2006). It investigates how oil exploration and exploitation in the Niger Delta generate ecological degradation and socio-economic marginalization, and how these conditions subsequently shape the construction of youth subjectivity in both novels. Using postcolonial theory and ecocriticism, the study conceptualizes the Niger Delta as a site of internal colonialism where multinational oil corporations and the postcolonial state collaborate in systems of extraction that produce environmental ruin and social displacement. Ecocriticism is employed to foreground the ecological consequences of oil production, particularly through the notion of “slow violence,” while postcolonial theory provides a framework for understanding power, marginality, and resistance within petro-capitalist structures. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative textual analysis of both novels, focusing on narrative representations of environmental degradation, socio-political injustice, and youth identity formation. The analysis reveals that in The Activist, youth subjectivity is largely constructed through revolutionary consciousness and eco-political activism, as the protagonist seeks structural transformation and environmental restoration. In contrast, Yellow-Yellow presents a more fragmented and gendered formation of youth identity, shaped by ecological devastation, sexual exploitation, racial stigmatization, and urban precarity. The study concludes that petro-capitalism functions not only as an economic system but also as a force that reshapes both ecological landscapes and human identities. It argues that environmental violence in the Niger Delta is central to the production of unstable and contested youth subjectivities in both texts. Ultimately, the novels are positioned as critical eco-postcolonial narratives that expose the destructive consequences of resource extraction while also highlighting forms of resistance and survival within marginalized communities. | Title: Effectiveness Of Group Counseling And Study Habits On The Academic Performance Of Underachieving Students In Senior Secondary Schools In Rivers State Author: Ngozi Allwell Egwurugwu, PhD Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of group cou This study examines the effectiveness of group counseling and study habits on the academic performance of underachieving students in senior secondary schools in Rivers State. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design involving pre-test and post-test measures for experimental and control groups. The population of the study consisted of underachieving senior secondary school students in public secondary schools in Rivers State. A sample of 80 students was selected using a multistage sampling technique, with 40 students assigned to the experimental group and 40 to the control group. The experimental group participated in structured group counseling sessions and study habit training for eight weeks, while the control group received no intervention during the study period. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and students’ academic performance records. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that group counseling significantly improved the academic performance of underachieving students. The results also showed that group counseling significantly influenced students’ learning motivation. Furthermore, improved study habits had a significant effect on students’ academic performance. The study also found that the combined intervention of group counseling and study habit training produced the highest improvement in students’ academic performance. The study concluded that counseling interventions and effective study habit strategies are important tools for improving academic outcomes among underachieving students. The study recommended that schools strengthen counseling services and integrate study habit training into academic support programmes for students experiencing academic difficulties. With the aid of the study objectives, two hypotheses were formulated in the study. The mixed method research design was adopted in the study. The population of this study comprised the entire academic staff across the four selected public tertiary institutions in Benue State totaling 1,205. The study employed the census approach given that the study deemed the entire population of the study convenient and accommodating. Therefore, all the members of the population were sampled in the study. Frequency distribution tables and simple percentages were used to summarize of the responses. In addition, the mean analysis and standard deviation were used to analyze the data generated from the field while the linear regression was used to test the hypotheses formulated in the study. With regression analysis showing a correlation coefficient (R = 0.434) and an R² value of 0.188 (Adjusted R² = 0.188, SE = 0.68188), meaning that approximately 18.8% of the variance in research productivity is explained by strike actions, the study reveals among others that, industrial disputes affect the research productivity of academic staff of tertiary institutions in Benue State. The study concludes that, industrial disputes, particularly strike actions, significantly affect research productivity and academic work and quality service delivery of academic staff of tertiary institutions in Benue State. The study recommends among others that, Government at the federal and state levels should improve facilities, libraries, and laboratories and also fund research grants and development projects through agencies like TETFUND in tertiary institutions in Benue State. In addition, unions should negotiate research continuity clauses in agreements, ensuring that essential research activities and international collaborations are not sacrificed during industrial disputes as this will enable the academic staff of tertiary institutions in Benue State to remain research productive in terms of journal publications and conference presentations. It concentrates on how CBL improves the usefulness and openness of adult education through participatory methods like peer-to-peer learning, the use of regional languages, and the incorporation of indigenous knowledge. Functional literacy, health literacy, peace and civic education, vocational skills training, and hardship reduction initiatives are all part of adult education programmes. These programmes seek to enhance well-being, promote political engagement, and empower both urban and rural communities. Cooperative farming education, mobile learning hubs, and energy-efficient classrooms are examples of grassroots innovations that demonstrated promise to overcome infrastructure, social and economic drawbacks and restrictions of adult education programmes. The study concludes that the contribution of community-based learning and grassroots innovations to the advancement of sustainable adult education programmes cannot be overstated. Based on the above, the study suggests that policymakers need to create guidelines that explicitly support community-based learning strategies, allocate resources for them, and hasten their realization. Also, adult education facilitators should receive ongoing training and development in digital proficiency, inclusive classroom instruction, and interactive techniques that will enable them effectively manage resources and advance sustainability that promotes to promote adult education programmes. Simple random sampling is used on 200 employees, hypothesis testing using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). This study provides evidence that commitment, culture and organizational support is a positive and significant effect on the job satisfaction. The other causality shows that organizational commitment and organizational support is a positive and significant effect on the Organizational Citizenship Behavior. The organizational culture and job satisfaction is positive but not significant effect on Organizational Citizenship Behavior. Job satisfaction is not a mediating role in explaining the effect of commitment, culture and organizational support on Organizational Citizenship Behavior. The practical implications of this research provide increased knowledge and understanding of the employees and the management to make changes in Organizational Citizenship Behavior of the Islamic banking employees to the good direction through organizational commitment and organizational support. The limitations of this study on the sample size using only permanent employees and the Islamic Banks just so limit the ability to generalize the results of the research findings.
