| Title: The Opposite Subject In Progressive Time: Xiao Wu By Jia Zhangke Author: Grace Kentil (Ph.D) Abstract: Given the troubled history of the self in modern C Given the troubled history of the self in modern China and images of Successful Person dominating imagination of personhood, this paper explores how the 1990s drastic marketization impacts the process of subject formation in contemporary China. It draws on analyses of Jia Zhangke’s film Xiao Wu to reveal possible modes of surviving when confronted with homogeneous empty time of consumerist culture and fractured space of postsocialist society. Homogeneous empty time creates its ideal subject--the possessive individual; at the same time, it inevitably calls into existence its negating subject. Xiao Wu, as a negating subject, embodies a time-space that is not mere legacy of the pre-modern era, but a new product of a sequence of drastic clashes with modernity itself. Xiao Wu’s negation of progressive time stands not as a nostalgic longing, but as a conscious effort of bringing about a new subject without establishing the self. | Title: Cultural Empathy In Swedish Schools Via Aesthetic Communication Author: Grajek Haisni Abstract: In the current Swedish society differences are gro In the current Swedish society differences are growing regarding who has the right to learn and use artistic forms of expression. Where a citizen comes from, socially and geo-graphically, more and more determines her tools for handling life. A variety of steering documents state that all Swedish youths should have the right to learn and use artistic forms of expression. At the same time the demands on equal assessment and grading are growing stronger in Sweden, which force teachers to put efforts on documentation and grading, instead of musical learning. The aim of this article is to present and discuss possibilities for pupils to develop Cultural Citizenship through music in the school situation where different views of equality are competing. This article discusses to what extent it is possible to conduct democratic inclusive music education towards Cultural Citizenship in the current time of increased demands of documentation, assessment and grading. To come close to the phenomena of Cultural Citizenship in music educational settings, and to offer theoretical tools for understanding and reflection, the to some extent contradictory political and educational philosophies of Hannah Arendt was used. Njetra (Ph.D) Abstract: While other Arab regimes in the Middle East and No While other Arab regimes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have crumbled due to popular pressure without massive amounts of blood being spilled, the Syrian government continues to oppress and kill oppositional forces and its citizens at an increasingly alarming rate. Despite European and US pressure through United Nations mechanisms, there does not appear to be full international support for any post-Assad Syria, nor a response to outside intervention, such as that done by Russia and Iran. The current US administration is in large part distracted because of upcoming elections and the lagging economy. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a false diplomatic choice: a US led Invasion or a UN Sponsored Resolution. Perhaps the resolution of the Syrian dilemma is somewhere else. | Title: Coverage Of Conspiracy Theories On Covid-19 By The Guardian And Punch Newspapers (March – December, 2020) Author: Ukaegbu, Michael Ibe (PhD) & Kwani, Oforiokuma Isoboye Abstract: Following the spate of infodemic that trailed the Following the spate of infodemic that trailed the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study sought to examine coverage of conspiracy theories. Adopting the content analysis research methodology, the study among other objectives sought to identify the frames of conspiracy theories in The Guardian and Punch newspapers and the extent to which the reports addressed health myths and related challenges in the nation’s health sector. The study was anchored on the theory of Planned Behaviour and Framing theory. The population consisted of all the 38 national dailies in Nigeria in the first stream and a total of 300 (i.e. 150 each) issues of The Guardian and Punch newspapers respectively, in the second stream. A sample size of 40 was determined from the population, using the composite week method. This was aided by the constructed study calendar that covered the period between March to December 2020. The instruments for data collection were the coding sheet and coding guide, while the units of analysis were straight news, editorial, interview, special reports, cartoons and letters to editors. Quantitative data were presented using frequency distribution tables and percentages, and analysed with the constant comparative technique. In view of the above, findings in the study indicated that reports on conspiracy theories appeared prominently on both The Guardian and Punch newspapers, while the dominant conspiracy theory frames were that COVID-19 is a means to install 5G network, COVID-19 is a Western ploy to weaken the rest of the world’s economies, and that the failing health sector exacerbated the spread of COVID-19. Results also showed that there were sustained reportage of COVID-19 stories in The Guardian and Punch newspapers, and that these reports adversely addressed health myths and related challenges in the nation’s health sector. Thus, the study concludes that there has been a preponderance of media reports on COVID-19, of much interest to communication researchers, including the extent to which the media have succeeded in juxtaposing facts with misinformation and conspiracy theories. It therefore becomes imperative for the media to shift from merely reporting COVID-19 pandemic from the periphery to further focus on issues that mitigate containment efforts. To this end, the study recommends that in tackling the effect of conspiracy theories on COVID-19, media should dedicate substantial space in providing all the right information about the virus, juxtaposing them with misinformation, while the media should galvanize all stakeholders to live up to their responsibilities by framing reports on efforts stakeholders are making towards containing the virus. | Title: Metaphysics As Dilemma: Perspectives From William James’s Philosophy Author: ThankGod Bekweri Amadi (PhD) Abstract: This paper highlights the contributions of William This paper highlights the contributions of William James, the American philosopher and one of the leading exponents of pragmatism to the building of the metaphysical edifice. This is pertinent since some scholars consider him merely as a methodologist rather than as a deep metaphysician that he is. James in his Pragmatism advocated for a philosophy which he calls “pragmatism”. This philosophy, according to him, is not new. It could be traced back to Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Locke, and Hodgson. It is primarily a method of philosophizing. But this assertion of his has misled many into reducing him to a methodologist. This paper therefore attempts to show that James is not merely a methodologist, but a deep metaphysical thinker whose philosophy shifted the boundaries of metaphysics from the science of ousia (or being) to the holistic articulation and resolution of dilemmas. Our analytic-cum-deconstructive study of William James’s pragmatism shows that pragmatism as a metaphysical theory is a way of going around versus staying around the traditional metaphysical problems. James practically discussed the dilemmas of substance, design in nature, freewill-determinism and monism-pluralism, as few representations of the traditional problems of metaphysics. He concludes that pragmatism is a common-sense philosophy. Our deconstructive analysis of his positions shows that metaphysics, for James, is a way around the old dilemmas/problems of philosophy; hence, we argue that James made novel contribution to the metaphysical enterprise.
