Number 2 Title: CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF INSURANCE COMPANIES IN NIGERIA
Author: kaka Dautari, Dr. C.C. Ebere & Prof. Uwaoma Ironkwe
Abstract: ... This study investigated if corporate social responsibility can improve the financial performance of insurance companies in Nigeria. Given the importance of insurance companies in the economic growth process as they take on risks of economic agents, the study sampled eight (8) insurance companies that are quoted on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). The study applied the random effect estimator, in addition to panel unit root and cointegration in analysing panel dataset covering 2011 to 2022. Moreso, the study examined the effect of firm-specific and macroeconomic factors on financial performance, examining how leverage, firm size, gross written premium, GDP growth rate and exchange rate affect financial performance. The finding shows that CSR does not drive financial performance, but rather had negative and insignificant effect on return on asset. The random effect result shows that exchange rate and leverage had negative and significant impact on ROA, as gross written premium significantly contributed positively to the financial performance of the insurance companies. The study shows that CSR investment does not potentially improve performance and as such, the study recommends that insurance companies increase their CSR spending, as their operations is affected by the society in the same manner that the activities of the corporation affect the society. Utilizing focus group discussions and secondary data analysis form empirical studies, the research highlights significant farmer displacement to urban areas and Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps, resulting in decreased food production, shortages, and increased prices. Specific impacts in Jigawa and Zamfara States illustrate severe disruptions in food supply chains. Despite ongoing efforts by Federal and State Governments, the desired outcomes have not been achieved, perpetuating a cycle of violence, joblessness, and further insecurity, especially among the youth. Number 2 Title: Examining The Role of ADR in Resolving Disputes Arising from International Investment Agreements
Author: Isreal Marshall
Abstract: ... The purpose of this study is to determine how well ADR handles IIIAs that result from IIAs. ADR measures require numerous benefits over arbitration, including reduced costs, greater flexibility, less hostility or animosity, expert determination, mediation, conciliation, and mini-trials. However, the benefit gained from using ADR might be impacted by cultural influences. Every culture has unique customs for handling conflict, negotiating, and making decisions, which shapes the character of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes. Because of this, for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to be effective, the parties to an international investment dispute must take the time to comprehend these cultural differences. Consequently, the study also indicates that more research on the ADR from a cross-cultural perspective is required, including an examination of empirical data, theoretical developments, organizational integration strategies, institutional support, and the technology components of ADR. In light of these suggestions, the studies that followed contribute to the body of knowledge on international investment dispute resolution in a way that is both efficient and equitable.
