Different ethnic groups of Bangladesh and their colorful lifestyles have significantly enriched the entire culture of Bangladesh. For centuries, Bangladesh has been the dwelling place of different ethnic groups. At least 350 million people worldwide are considered to be indigenous and in Bangladesh about two million indigenous people of 45 different distinct communities are living throughout the country (Hossain,2003). These people with distinctive social and cultural practices, languages and customs are commonly known as Adivasis by themselves. Among them Khasis are one of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable Adivasi community living in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts. They have been characterized by the dominant groups as distinctive with their comparatively more isolated habitation in the hilly and forest areas and their distinct socio-economic and cultural lives (Munda, 2002). The Khasi Mongolite ethnic group. The Khasias descended to the Khasia hills and Jaintia hills from Cherapunji and Shilong regions. They migrated to Bangladesh from Assam where they came about five hundred years ago, presumably from Tibet, and now form one of the major matriarchal tribes in Bangladesh. Khasias are short people with flat noses and mouths, high jaws, and small and straightened black eyes. This matrilineal ethnic group resides mainly in 11Upazilas of the greater Sylhet District in the Northeastern region of Bangladesh. According to the government census of 1991, the Khasi population in Bangladesh is 12,280. Their livelihood pattern and their culture are different from the mainstream population. Khasia peoples play a great role in our socio economic condition. They are part and parcel of our tradition. They have to face a number of problems in their daily life. Educational technology has an important role in the school counselling programme. Some of the ways it does this is by identifying and solving problems that could hinder learning; stating appropriate objectives and continuously reviewing and revising them according to the changing needs of the community; emphasising the utilisation of appropriate learning strategies and resources; evaluating the effectiveness of the school system by collecting and analysing data to make decisions about individual learners and the educational system. There is the need to explore other ways educational technology can contribute with more knowledge about how people learn and availability of communication tools. Title: The Impact of Gender Difference on Science Students’ Motivation Author: Mohammad U. T. (Ph.D) Abstract: ... Motivation is the internal state that arouses, directs, and sustains goal-oriented behavior. In particular, motivation to learn refers to the disposition of students to find academic activities relevant and worthwhile who try to derive the intended benefits from them. In studying the motivation to learn science, researchers examine why students strive to learn science, how intensively they strive, and what beliefs, feelings, and emotions characterize them in this process. Motivated learners are thus self regulated learners who attempt to monitor and control their own learning. Intrinsic motivation and personal relevance is major motivational component that appear to influence self-regulated learning. The purpose of the study is to investigate the gender differences into the status of intrinsic motivation and personal relevance towards science learning among intermediate science students. A sample of 600 intermediate science students from Punjab (Pakistan), in which 300 males and 300 females were serve as the sample of the study which were selected through two phase cluster sampling. The 30-item Science Motivation Questionnaire developed by Glynn and Koballa (2006) was used to measure intrinsic motivation and personal relevance scores towards science. The scores were calculated and summarized through mean and standard deviation. The significance of difference between mean scores of male and female intermediate students was measured by t-test (two-tailed). The result revealed that male and female science students did not differ in science motivation, however female science students were found somewhat better in their motivation towards science than males. Title: Issues in Land Use Act and Its Impact in Modern Day Rivers State Author: Taylor, Tamunosaki (PhD) Abstract: ... The doctrine of magisterial powers has continued to stoke up debates among political theorists. Major actors of this wave, especially the followers of Hobbes argue that the state exists primarily to intervene and moderate the conduct of society. But there seems to be a contradiction herein, considering the present socio-political experience of Nigerians. This paper, drawing its claim from the Land Use Act, x-rays the politics of the Act within the Nigeria context. Statutorily, the land Use Act which has remained effective since 1970s has not only in a way continued to interfere with the lockian equality theory of our paper, it has also, the study avows, empowered the state beyond control. The interpretation of the act on the basis of the greater good doctrine, the researcher furthers, is a means that has largely toppled the powers of the state. The study adopts content analysis and the natural law theory in response to the Act, especially its impact on modern day Rivers State. Keywords: Land Use Act, Natural Law Theory. Show More |

Title: Family Structure, Emotional Intelligence and Mental Health Among Adults in Rivers State Author: Patricia Melchizedek Ogonda (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This study examines the relationship between family structure, emotional intelligence, and mental health among adults in Rivers State. Specifically, it investigated the individual effects of family structure and emotional intelligence on mental health and their combined influence. The study adopted a correlational research design and involved a sample of 400 adults selected from both urban and rural communities using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, including sections on demographic information, the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), and the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). Reliability indices for the instruments were acceptable (WLEIS α = 0.87; GHQ-12 α = 0.82). Descriptive statistics summarized participants’ characteristics, while Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analyses tested the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed a significant positive relationship between family structure and mental health (r = 0.312, p < 0.01), indicating that adults in cohesive and supportive family settings exhibited better psychological wellbeing. Emotional intelligence was also positively correlated with mental health (r = 0.451, p < 0.01), demonstrating that adults with higher emotional competencies experienced lower psychological distress. Multiple regression analysis showed that family structure and emotional intelligence jointly explained 24.2% of the variance in mental health (R² = 0.242, F(2,397) = 14.98, p < 0.01), with both variables making significant independent contributions. The findings suggest that mental health among adults is influenced by both individual emotional skills and family environmental factors. The study concludes that interventions aimed at improving adult mental wellbeing in Rivers State should address both the enhancement of emotional intelligence and the promotion of supportive family structures. The study was conducted in SMKA Maahad Hamidiah Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia. The instrument used was a questionnaire with 34 items. It was distributed to 132 Form Four students. The study employed descriptive and inferential statistics in the data analysis. The study revealed that the cognitive and affective components of attitude were found to be significantly correlated with achievement. However, the result also showed that there was no relation between the behaviour component and achievement. Title: Building Community Resilience in The Face of Environmental Challenges Through Community – Based Environmental Adult Education Author: Kpeno Amon Ephraim & Wobodo Charles Christiana Abstract: ... This paper centers towards building community resilience in the face of environmental challenges through community based environmental adult education. Community resilience is the ability of a community to recover from a disaster or persist sustainably in the face of ongoing hardship or challenges such as climate change, pollution, clean water, deforestation, conservation of natural resources, globalization, and urbanization. Building resilience through Environmental adult education means strengthening communities and enhancing their health in a way that will reduce the negative impacts of environmental challenges both in the present and the future. Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) has an important role to play in building resilience, promoting adaptation and building sustainable landscapes critical to addressing environmental challenges. Also, the CAMPFIRE Programme for resources conservation recognizes the indigenous communities as the bonafide owners of natural resources, equips them with knowledge to control and manage their resources by themselves. This paper therefore recommends that rural dwellers in developing countries should rise up to the management and protection of their environmental resources and change their attitude towards the environment.
