Title: Examining How Inquiry-Based Science Classrooms Use Questioning and Assessment Techniques to Perpetuate Gender Stereotypes Author: Lawson Hithro & Felix Huiston Abstract: ... The purpose of this study was to investigate the questioning strategies of preservice teachers when teaching science as inquiry. The guiding questions for this research were: In what ways do the questioning strategies of preservice teachers differ for male and female elementary students when teaching science as inquiry and how is Bloom’s Taxonomy evident within the questioning strategies of preservice teachers? Examination of the data indicated that participants asked a total of 4,158 questions to their elementary aged students. Of these questions, 974 (23%) were asked to boys, and 991 (24%) were asked to girls. The remaining questions (53%) were asked to the class as a whole, therefore no gender could be assigned to these questions. In relation to Bloom’s Taxonomy, 74% of the questions were basic knowledge, 15% were secondary comprehension, 2% were application, 4% were analysis, 1% were synthesis, and 3% were evaluation. Title: The Association between Instructor Qualities and the Pedagogical Approach Selected for teaching Christian Religious Education in Secondary Schools in Kenya Author: Sandra Jityu (Ph.D) & Peter Munjoi Abstract: ... While experience and education level are the two primary characteristics of a teacher, age and gender are also important factors in the teaching profession. The study examined the connection between the pedagogy selected for Christian Religious Education instruction and the attributes of the teachers. Cross-sectional research design and quantitative approach were used in the study. Using the Krejcie and Morgan table, 357 people were sampled. A questionnaire was used to gather data, and SPSS was used for analysis. The results showed a strong association between the educational technique that CRE teachers chose and their age, education level, experience as teachers, and position as examiners. Title: Teachers Teaching Method and Students Attitude on Achievement in Business Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State Author: Bonwa, Sanyie Mercy (PhD) Abstract: ... The study examines teachers’ teaching method and students attitude on achievement in business studies in junior secondary schools in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The study population comprised 1,239 teachers and 36,753 students in the 24 public Junior Secondary Schools in the study area. A sample of 288 respondents (72 Business studies teachers and 216 JSC III students) was selected using multistage sampling in 20 public Junior Secondary Schools in the study area. A 20-item non-cognitive instrument titled “Teachers’ Teaching Method and Students Attitude on Achievement in Business Studies Questionnaire” (TTMSAABSQ), and a 40-item cognitive instrument “Business Studies Achievement Test” (BSAT), with reliability coefficients of 0.882, and 0.874 were used for data collection. Data collected was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) to answer research questions 1 and 2, while Multiple Regression Analysis was used to answer question 3. The study revealed Pearson Correlation Coefficients (r) of 0.857, and 0.849, as well as same p-value of 0.000, which indicated a positive, very strong and significant contribution of teachers teaching methods, and students’ attitude to students’ achievement in Business studies in Junior Secondary schools in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. The study recommended among others that the Ministry of Education should mandate regular professional development workshops focused on learner-centered, psychological, innovative, and differentiated instructional techniques. Alongside, educators and policymakers should prioritize investments in classroom instructional quality by introducing teacher performance incentives tied to student learning outcomes, particularly in subjects like Business Studies, where skill acquisition and engagement are vital. Title: Study on how to Use Cases to Teach Students to Think Analytically Author: Herma Tarza Abstract: ... This study was conducted to determine the effect of case-based teaching-learning on students’ analytical thinking, experimented with the final year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students, Gedu College of Business Studies, Royal University of Bhutan. The study was conducted between July and December, the Autumn Semester of 2020. There were 38 students in total who studied HRM307 Industrial Relations as their fifth major module for Human Resource Management group. Based on the survey conducted towards the end of the completion of module where 33 students participated, their opinion that the ‘case-based teaching-learning have improved’ analytical thinking stands at the mean value of 3.4 (out of 5). This indicates that the case-based teaching-learning intervention effect their analytical skills. The comparative study on the scores of assignments was also conducted. Although the mean score of the first assignment and the second assignment does not show significant difference, the average score of the first assignment and the third assignment has a statistically significant difference. This was confirmed through the paired sample t-test. Thus, it can be concluded that when the case intervention was prolonged over a period of time, it positively impacted students‟ enhancement of analytical thinking. Title: Adversity Quotient as Correlate of Students Scholastic Adjustment: A Case Study of Rivers State Owned Universities Author: Love, Nwamadi Nwosu (Ph.D) & Hero, Nwaniwe Eze-Uzuke Abstract: ... This study investigates adversity quotient as correlate of student’s scholastic adjustment. Three research questions and three corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research design for this study was correlational design. The estimated population for this study was 42,000 undergraduates in the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) and Rivers State University (RSU) respectively. This estimation was because as at the time of this study there was no accurate figure in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of these institutions. The sample size of this study comprised 500 undergraduates in the respective universities. Multi stage sampling technique was adopted for the study. Two researchers made instruments titled: “Students Adversity Quotient Inventory (SAQI) and “Students Scholastic Adjustment Scale (SCAS) was used for data collection. The instruments (SAQI) and (SCAS) were validated based on face and content validities by experts. Cronbach alpha reliability statistics was used to compute the general reliability coefficient of (SAQI) to be .79 and (SCAS) to be .75. Pearson Product Moment Correlational (PPMC) was used to answer research question 1-3 and their corresponding hypotheses was also tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of the study show that help-seeking behaviour, self-control and self-motivation positively and significantly relate to scholastic adjustment of students. Title: Iranian Perspective on Corpora in Translator Training Author: Helia Vaezian Abstract: ... Corpora first found their way into Translation Studies as a means to study the language of translation and its distinctive features (Baker, 1993). They were applied, however, by translation researchers in other areas such as translation evaluation and machine translation as well. Translator education is another area which has enjoyed the benefits of corpora in recent years. This paper elaborates on the applications of corpora in translator training and the kind of information they have to offer to student translators in this context. It further explores the benefits of corpus-based translation teaching for student translators in terms of their professional prospects. The paper finally reports the results of an experiment in which an undergraduate class of translation students from the Department of Translation Studies at Allameh Tabataba’i University, Tehran, Iran was introduced to disposable corpora. The problems students faced in building disposable corpora of Persian texts and, later on, in analyzing Persian corpora with corpus analysis tools and finally the solutions adopted to resolve the problems are all explained in detail. Title: Adult Literacy Education Programme in Rivers State: Implication for Conflict Resolution Author: Peterside, Henry Vincent (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This study examines the contributions of adult literacy education programme in the resolution of conflicts in Rivers State. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. It adopted a descriptive survey research with a sample size of 360 drawn from a population of 3600 adult learners from Opobo/Nkoro, Etche and Ahoada West local Government Areas of Rivers State, using a combination of stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The data collecting instrument was the researchers’ structured questionnaire, titled “Adult Literacy on Conflict Resolution Questionnaire” (ALCRQ), which was face validated by three experts. The reliability coefficient value of .79 was obtained using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient Statistical method. Data was analyze using the mean and grand mean to answer the research questions. While the chi-square statistic was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings shows that adult literacy education programme has contributed in the resolution of various conflicts in Rivers State. This study concludes by recommending, among others, that strategies for curbing land dispute should be integrated into the adult literacy curriculum. Despite past investments in Kenya’s Technical, Industrial, Vocational Education and Training (TIVET) subsector, many school leavers fail to access TIVET. This is because the subsector is said to be facing many challenges related to wastage of resources, irrelevant training and turnover of personnel. Performance contracting has been acclaimed as an effective and promising means of improving the performance of public enterprises as well as government departments. The government of Kenya introduced performance contract signing in the year 2004. The performance contracts were aimed at improving resource utilization in public institutions among other objectives. This study sought to establish the perceptions of Kenyan tutors in Technical Institutes in Rift Valley about the impact of performance contracts as a paradigm shift on the utilization of teaching and learning resources. The study adopted a survey strategy. The study population comprised of tutors, Heads of Department and Principals of randomly selected public Technical Institutes in Kenya. The stratified random sampling technique was applied in the selection of the study sample. This involved the grouping of tutors into 8 strata according to the available departments. Thereafter the proportionate random sampling technique was applied to get an equal proportion of respondents from each stratum. The saturated sampling technique was used to sample the heads of department and principals. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. This entailed the supplying of questionnaires to tutors, heads of department and principals of the sampled Technical Institutes. Interviews were conducted with principals of the sampled institutions. It is against this background that this paper discusses creative university education and entrepreneurial skills as a sine qua non for sustainable national development. The importance of a creative university education is that it provides students with adequate creative and innovative knowledge after graduation, allowing for self-reliance and becoming job creators instead of job seekers. This scenario will be beneficial to himself/herself, the society and the economy as a whole, now and in the near future without compromise to attain sustainability. Nigerian university administrators are faced with issues of lack of manpower, inadequate funding, lack of an innovative curriculum, amongst others. It was concluded that for the creation of entrepreneurial skills in the university, it will take the collaboration of the school administrators, government, staff and students to achieve a good result. Title: Comparing The Impact of Plyometrics, Core Stability, and Their Combination on The Static and Dynamic Balance of Female Futsal Author: Taribah Akalsh Abstract: ... This study aims to compare the effect of balance training methods including core stability, plyometrics and their combination on static and dynamic balance in female futsal players. To this end, a number of 60 female futsal players from Shahrekord city were selected as the participants using purposive sampling method. Then the subjects were randomly assigned into four groups each with 15 members including three experimental groups (core stability training (N=15), plyometric training (N=15) and combination training (N=15)) and a control group (N=15). Height, weight and leg length were measured in the subjects. In the pretest, the subjects performed Stork Test and Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) to examine their static and dynamic balance performance, respectively. Based on the training protocol, the experimental groups did 8 weeks of their assigned exercise training. The training sessions were held three times a week and 45 minutes per session. The control subjects performed their routine trainings. After eight weeks, all variables were measured in the four groups again. Paired t test was run for within-group comparison, and one-way ANOVA was used for between-group comparison. The results showed that combination training group achieved the best performance in both static and dynamic balance comparing with other groups. Based on the present findings, it can be concluded that a combination of core stability and plyometric exercises may improve static and dynamic balance in female futsal players. The study “visual Narratives of Youth Restiveness in Bodo City in Acrylic and Newspaper Media: A Mixed Media Painting Exploration” is aimed at using acrylic paint and newspaper to visually narrate the activities of youth restiveness in Bodo city. Bodo City is a community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State and one of the big communities in Ogoni Kingdom of Rivers State. Bodo city is a riverine community in Rivers State that is richly endowed with cultural values and with crude oil. The community previously use to be a very peaceful and hospitable place for people, and they have enjoyed peace over the years until in the recent past when the activities of oil exploration characterized by gross injustice paved way for restiveness. With the use of Acrylic and newspaper on canvas, the research shows the dissatisfaction of the people of Niger Delta especially the Youths of Bodo city who manifest in their essence a restiveness of a people who want to reclaim their rights of human dignity, justice, equity and fair play as the activities of exploration and exploitation have robbed them off their means of livelihood and yet no meaningful development in the region to at least compensate for the ecological and maritime devastation of the region. The failure of the multinational companies to create local employment as well as support local entrepreneurship, have become a reoccurring discussion and yet to no avail. In the recent past, this crisis has generated more attention than ever before, forcing many out of their homes and also made many children orphans. Kidnapping, cultism and pipeline vandalization are on the increase. Thus, to proffer solution artistically and also to visually showcase some of the activities of youth restiveness in Bodo City, this calls for the need to carry out this study that uses acrylic and newspaper to produce mixed media paintings that reflect youth restiveness of Bodo City. The idea of using acrylic and newspaper is to expand the scope of media exploration and to achieve the aim and objectives study related literature and expression theory reviewed to guide the study. A studio experimental research design was adopted for the study. Finally, the paintings produced were analysed and discussed. The study concludes that the government should pay attention to the plight of the youths of Bodo city. Also, more innovative works should be encouraged and produced with acrylic and newspaper to expand media exploration in painting. Title: Teacher-Student Relationship and Academic Achievement Among University Undergraduates in State-Owned Universities in Rivers State Author: Ngozi Allwell Egwurugwu Abstract: ... This study investigates the relationship between teacher–student relationships and academic achievement among undergraduates in state-owned universities in Rivers State. The study aimed to examine the nature of teacher–student interactions, assess students’ academic achievement, and determine the influence of teacher support on academic outcomes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and a sample of 400 undergraduate students was selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire measured on a four-point Likert scale and analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Findings revealed that students perceive lecturers as approachable, supportive, and communicative, and that positive teacher–student interactions significantly enhance students’ academic performance. The study also found that lecturer encouragement, timely feedback, and concern for students’ learning positively influence motivation and engagement, contributing to higher academic achievement. It was concluded that fostering strong teacher–student relationships is essential for improving academic outcomes, and universities are encouraged to implement strategies that promote supportive interactions, effective feedback, and mentoring programs.
