Title: Artificial Multicultural Representations in Higher Education Author: Steve Klinson (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This is a conceptual paper to study the artificial multicultural representations in higher education through French theorist Jean Baudrillard’s postmodernist perspective. This study reviews literature and summarizes the evidence that higher education institutions are complicit in creation of hyperreality through multicultural misrepresentations in relationship to educational inequalities. The evidence outlined in the paper is analyzed using the postmodernist critical framework. Postmodernism refers to an emerging social reality, and focuses on cultural rather than economic or structural features (Kando, 1996). The framework is appropriate for this inquiry because it allows the reader to understand societal symbolic exchange and simulacra in terms of a counterfeit democracy in higher education, specifically addressing multiculturalism. The findings of the paper include different levels of hyperreality in higher education observed through quantitative data misrepresentation, ideological reproduction in higher education, as viewed from a Critical Race Theory (CRT) perspective, and the elusive quest for justice in democratic educational practice. The literature supports the conclusion that to truly counter educational disparities, the we must remove the limiting boundaries of conventionally perceived reality. The paper ends with recommendations for future research on higher education diversity measurement reviews. These measures must either be tailored to specific multicultural contexts, or otherwise must be sufficiently robust to be applicable across populations of students, faculty, and researchers. Title: Evaluation of Psychometric Properties of the Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) Mathematics Questions in Rivers State Author: Asuk, Unyejit William, Ph.D & West, Jenbarimiema Abstract: ... This study critically examines the evaluation of psychometric properties of the Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) Mathematics Questions in Rivers State. The study adopted the utilitarian evaluation design because it is appropriate for the study. The population of the study includes all the JSCE mathematics questions for the period under review. Four (4) research questions and four (4) hypotheses guided the study. A sample size of four hundred and forty-seven (447) mathematics questions were drawn from the JSCE mathematics questions Using Stratified simple random sampling technique. The number of weeks, weights, analysis of items difficulty and discrimination indices and the percentage weights assigned to the JSCE mathematics questions generated data for the study. Mean (X ̅), standard deviations, weights and percentage weights were used to answer the research questions while PPMC, t-test and chi-square statistics were used to test the hypotheses at 5% probability level. The results showed that the JSCE mathematics questions have low content validity and low reliability coefficients. The weights, percentage weights and cognitive levels stated in the JSCE mathematics curriculum are not the same tested in the JSCE mathematics questions. Again, some cognitive levels were over emphasized and others were under emphasized and even completely omitted in the JSCE mathematics questions. The items difficulty and discrimination indices in the JSCE mathematics questions showed poor item difficulty indices and the item discrimination did not discriminate between the high and low ability group of students. Hence, the JSCE mathematics questions under review do not possesses adequate psychometric properties. Recommendations for the way forward are made. Title: Improving Speaking Participation for the Working Adult Students through the Role-Plays Author: Rui Mahaman (Ph.D) Abstract: ... Not participating in speaking activities is a common problem in the English as Foreign Language bachelor classes of the second degree of Cantho University, Vietnam, but according to Ur (1996) speaking seems to be the most important skills of all the four skills. Many of the students are middle-aged ones that are used to Grammar translation method in their past study. To solve this problem, I used ‘role- plays’ to create many situations for them to speak out. Twenty four students of the 16th Language Kiengiang course trained by Cantho University were selected. They were in the first semester of the first year with the subject, Communication 1, and almost all of them were at pre-intermediate level of listening and speaking skill. Most of them were in their 30s and 40s, and five of them were in their 20s and three in their 50s. Ten sessions were treated with ten types of activities of role-plays done in pairs, small groups, big groups and the whole class. With daily observation, interviews, a questionnaire the result was that ten role-plays helped the working adult students in their 20s-50s to participate in speaking English significantly. Although it was difficult for the 50s, they could fulfil their talk in a basic and short answers with the help of the teacher. The role-plays in pairs and small groups helped the weak students than the big group but the tasks of big group were more effective for good students. This study aimed at investigating the difficulties in producing professional science teacher in the 21st century. To achieve this objective, a double response questionnaire combines with five point liker scale and open ended questions was used for the sample of the study which consisted of (77) teachers . Results showed the more acute difficulties facing the process of making professional science teachers, as seen by science teachers are: Administrative and organizational skills, personal and ethical domain, educational skills, specialized scientific literacy, which the least acute ones are Technologic skills, social skills. And the executive procedures needed for making professional science teacher, in the 21st century, are: developing positive attitudes of teachers towards science, taking care of preparation institutions outcomes, giving teachers the freedom to specify his needs in service, setting incentives, promotions, and ranking system connected to performance appraisal, supporting open electronic self-training programs, conducting workshops to exchange theoretical and practical experience of science teachers, and finally, training on instruction design, free inquiry, as well as writing specialized scientific and educational research. The Niger Delta is a ‘child of irony’, which produces one of the best crude oils in the world and solely sustains the Nigerian economy. Yet, the region wallows in extreme poverty, and lacks some of the most basic social amenities. This paper therefore, traces the history of the Niger Delta in relations to its contribution to the Nigerian economy through its oil welth. The paper adopts the historical-narrative approach. It also discusses the Slave Trade in the Niger Delta, the Era of Legitimate trade, the discovery and exploration of crude oil from 1956 to 1989. The paper concludes by examining the Niger Delta agitations, beginning with the Ogoni movement to the Niger Delta militancy, amnesty and post-Amnesty periods. Experts said that in community based research, there is an action research, so there is a categorization that community based research is include action research. The result of the research showed that empowerment to teachers in implementing thematic learning is not significant.
