Title: Purpose of Schooling and its Impact on Socialization Author: Eric Howells (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This paper focuses on the socializing function of the school and on the contention that it has remained the most stable traditional agent of socialization as well as the one that teaches and reinforces conformity the strongest. The school is the agent responsible for socializing groups of children and young people on specific skills and values in a society. As the most stable and formal socializing agent, in American society today, the school is expected to both train the individual for practical occupations and skills and to provide the individual with basic societal values, like loyalty to country, politeness, etc. Therefore, the school exercises strategic power relations as a means and as an end to teach conformity, and in so doing some students learn to become agents in its service, while others learn to oppose it. The school system has always been charged with the task of promoting conformity. Conformity is an insidious practice, and this paper proposes to frame the discussion on it around Foucault’s conception of power. Foucault’s interest in exploring the role power plays is that our identities as subjects and agents are formed apart from, and even before we participate in, the public realm: our identities are formed in private and semi-private peripheral social institutions, such as families and schools. Foucault further claims that we are formed as subjects and agents by being subjected to dangerous strategic power relations (e.g. sexism, racism, class oppression, and heterosexism) within those social institutions. Title: Tertiary Education Women and their Learning Styles Author: Zuzami G. & Fesamu Forwtel Abstract: ... The aim of this paper was to determine the association between personality and learning styles and their interactions with the expected degree classification of the final year female students and the teaching methods used at the Women’s University in Africa, Zimbabwe. A questionnaire consisting of demographics, twenty-five personality items, and academic questions was administered. The dominating personalities were extrovert and openness, whilst the dominating learning styles were elaborative processing and methodical study. The students understood the most when the lecture teaching method was utilized and they recommended that attachment and e-learning be co-opted to improve their academic performance. Χ2-tests of association were conducted and insignificant associations were exhibited between personality and learning style, and consequently with preferred teaching method, and expected academic qualification. This revealed diversity of students’ personality and learning styles implying that the university’s lecturers had to employ a variety of teaching methods to ensure high academic performance. Teacher attrition in public primary schools is a source of worry to educationist in Rivers State. Hence, this study examined the relationship between school variables and teacher attrition in public primary schools in Rivers West Senatorial District of Rivers State. The correlational research design was adopted for the study. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. Population of the study consisted of 2,184 teachers found in 319 public primary schools in Rivers West Senatorial District. The sample size of the study was 436 teachers in the primary school. This was obtained using the stratified sampling technique and simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a researcher-designed questionnaire titled; School Variables and Teacher Attrition Questionnaire (SVTAQ). Data were analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation. The results of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between teacher salary, working condition and school resources and teacher attrition in public primary schools in Rivers West Senatorial District of Rivers State. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that measures need to be put in place as to be able to retain quality teachers with higher educational qualification. Given the conclusion, it was recommended that; teachers are paid as at when due to encourage teachers to remain in the primary schools. Title: Improving the Teaching Quality of the Electrical Control of Mechanical Equipment using the Monitor and Control Generated System Author: Jyuan Miu (Ph.D), Fanyu Li & Ryam Pue Abstract: ... Under the limited resources of hardware equipment, in order to improve the practical teaching quality of the electrical control of mechanical equipment and strengthen the application ability of programmable logic controller (PLC) control technology of students, the construction of the virtual training platform based on MCGS configuration software is proposed. Through the configuration software, the controlled system is designed firstly, and then the simulation system is controlled by PLC through the RS232 communication. According to the control requirements, control tasks and I/O distribution of the simulation system, the students can program their own ladder diagram to finish the system control. The practical teaching results show that the replacement from the traditional light-emitting diodes to the motion animation of the controlled system improves the students’ interest, enriches the experiment contents and meets the requirements of practice teaching. Many researches have been conducted on performance evaluation but this study fulfills the gaps which exist in previous literatures. No doubt performance evaluation make accountable to the employees in front of their organization but it is beneficial for them because after evaluation process efficient and talented employees are promoted and there fringe benefits may move towards increment. As for as organization is concerned, due to performance evaluation process organization productivity increases. This study used five exogenous variables named as ADO, AT, TD, TT, FS and endogenous variables such as performance evaluation. This research investigated the relationship of independent variables and dependent variables. Therefore it is concluded that four variables such as ADO, AT, TD, FS have significant positive association with performance evaluation while TT has insignificant positive relationship. Title: Effects of Certain Social-Professional Factors on the Burnout Syndrome Development among Male Soccer Players in Tunisia Author: Hazi Miliodu & Uyaf Kuike Abstract: ... The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of certain social-professional factors on the burnout syndrome development among 132 Tunisian male soccer players (24.34 ± 5.55 years, 70.42 ± 7.9 kg and 1.76 ± 0.06 cm) belonging to the Tunisian Soccer League First Division. Our results have shown that Tunisian male soccer players are affected by burnout syndrome and the factors ‘Player team integration’, ‘Player coach relationship’, ‘Player age’, ‘Player material conditions’, ‘Player seniority’ significantly promote its trigger. These factors appear to be slightly different from those reported in other study carried out in United Kingdom on professional soccer players of the first division which specified that ‘Player age’, ‘Player education level’, ‘Player physical condition’, ‘Player marital status’, ‘Player position’ and ‘Player seniority’ are the main factors triggering burnout. The manifestation of the burnout in our study seems to be particularly the result of its three components’ development, such as the emotional exhaustion, the deshumanization and the reduced personal accomplishment. Nevertheless, the various challenges bedeviling the implementation of educational policies and programmes for economic development were highlighted and discussed.
