Education tenets of Pythagoreanism are pivoted on historicism, spiritualism, empiricism, aesthetics and discipline. Education based on these tenets fits the description of holistic and interdisciplinary education, which can provide direction for African philosophy of education. Holistic education, believed to have been originated through the works of Ron Miller and its ideal elaborated further in the journal Holistic Education Review (now, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice), is a philosophy that considers all human potentials in totality rather than an aggregate of constituent parts (Holistic Education Network, 2003; Khan, 2008; and Miller, 2000). As explained by Amada (nd), Holistic Education Network (2003) and Melissa (nd), it regards every human being as important and exploits intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative and spiritual potentials. Although the origin of holistic education is attributed to Miller, the concept has been with educators for centuries. For example, Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Johann Heinrich Peztalozzi (1746-1827) and John Dewey (1859-1852) advocate for holistic education (Miller, 2000). Title: Digital Divide: An Empirical Study of Teachers’ and Students’ Application of Digital Technology in Music Classroom Author: Eyiuche Rita Modeme, PhD & Ikenna Emmanuel Onwuegbuna, PhD Abstract: ... This study investigates the extent of the digital divide between the music teachers and students’ application of digital technology in music classrooms in Anambra State secondary schools, Nigeria. To achieve this, two research questions guided the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population for the study consisted of all public Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3) music students from the six educational zones in Anambra State Nigeria. The sample of the study consisted of 18 music education teachers and 270 students, using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments for data collection were two researchers self-developed sets of questionnaires. The instruments were validated by three experts, two in the department of Music and one in Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Reliability coefficient indices of 0.83 and 0.80 using Pearson’s (r) test-retest method. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that music teachers were rated to a low extent in their digital literacy background and application while, on the other hand, students were rated to a high extent. It was therefore concluded that there is a low extent of digital literacy background and application by teachers and while they can be excellent in a traditional class setting, their accessibility and communication with digitally-savvy students will be limited. The study, therefore, recommended amongst others that; there should be a promotion of digital literacy among music teachers through the incorporation of technology in the syllabus, teaching pedagogy and everyday teaching tasks in secondary schools and teachers’ development programs and technology training workshops should be organized regularly among music teachers by secondary school administrators as well as the government. Title: English Language and Language Endangerment in Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality Author: Regina Opara (Ph.D) & Vincent Obobolo (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This study investigates the extent to which English Language, used as language of the environment in most Ikwerre communities, has endangered the Ikwerre Language spoken in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study is based on mentalist and social interaction theories. Four research questions are developed to guide the study. A sample of 480 native inhabitants from two local government areas (Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre) in Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality is selected, using stratified random sampling technique. Three hundred (300) native speakers are drawn from five communities in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area while one hundred and eighty (180) are drawn from three communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area. The instruments for data collection are the questionnaire and oral interview. The data collected are analysed, using simple percentages. The study finds that English Language dominance in most Ikwerre communities hinders the spread of the Ikwerre Language. It is also found that many Ikwerre children cannot speak their mother tongue. Hence, the Ikwerre Language is at the eroding stage of endangerment. The researcher points out that the endangerment is reversible since it is still at the early stage. It is, therefore, recommended that Ikwerre Language be strengthened through status and corpus planning, and that children be motivated to speak the language, by giving incentives to children who speak it fluently. This work has contributed to knowledge, as the linguistic damage to Ikwerre Language due to environment has been discovered. Title: A History of the Raffia Industry in Ikot Ekpene Author: Mfon U. Ekpootu (PhD) Abstract: ... Raffia-weaving in Nigeria represents one of the legacies of a rich past and dates back in history. Unfortunately, the study of this very old and vital industry has been relegated to the background -typical for Nigeria’s traditional craft industries, as outmoded. It is perceived as a limitation to the modern capitalist society that places a premium on a knowledge economy, driven by innovation and creativity. Craft like raffia weaving by its immobility and intrinsic connection to tradition and locality is seen as not able to drive contemporary development. In recent times, the importance of craft is being re-visited, powered by the discourse on indigenous knowledge production and a rejection of linear development discourse. This paper looks at the history of the raffia industry in Ikot Ekpene, dubbed the ‘raffia city’, through the use of oral interviews, archival materials, and available literature. Employing a historical approach, this study demonstrates the importance of raffia in sustaining the local economy and argues for the need for a strong institutional support system to revitalize raffia production and enable a more robust integration of local content into development. One of the most important periods in the skills formation of a vocalist is the initial stage of learning, when the proper knowledge of breathing and the most rational vocal technique are laid. The correct classification of the voices hould happen during this period, the timbre of the voice, its range and tessitura should determine. In case of these functional bases violations there are violations in coordination of the functions of the vocal apparatus various elements and a distorted system of complex conditioned reflexes is formed in the cerebral cortex. This can develop occupational diseases of the functional nature, the symptoms of which may be similar to those of viral or bacterial origin. Activities aimed at the musical knowledge acquisition by phoniatrists and medical knowledge by vocal teachers are necessary; the joint work of vocal teachers, doctors-otolaryngologists, phoniatrists, phonopedists and physiologists will become more effective. This research is concerned with the pragmatic analysis of personal names in Ikwerre and English language. The objectives of the study were to; examine the structure of Ikwerre names; highlight the semantic contents of Ikwerre and English personal names; discuss the pragmatic representations of Ikwerre and English personal names; contrast between Ikwerre naming system and the English naming system. The research was a descriptive one which adopted a purposive sampling technique in its selection of one hundred and fifty Ikwerre and English personal names for the study. The study made use of primary data made up of recorded interviews and secondary data made up of textual materials and internet publication. Names were analyzed based on the theoretical framework of speech act theory and pragmatic theory such as conversational implicative. The data analyzed revealed the following findings: that Ikwerre names usually appear with the noun-verb, noun-noun or the noun (pronoun) – verb – adjective structure with the verb playing an important role; that personal names in Ikwerre perform the role of cultural identity denotation unlike the English personal names that place sound before meaning; that English children are named after their parents, godparents or deceased siblings; while the Ikwerre naming system considers names with descriptive meanings the English naming system most times names arbitrarily without establishing any link with the bearer and the meaning of the name. Title: PHCN IJA LOBOMO, A Word and Image Discourse Author: Graves, Nelson, P. (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This article addresses the implantation of folklore in the PHCN Exhibitions as a distinct practice and production in contemporary Nigerian art. Engaging exhibitions as sites of knowledge production, it examines how IJA LOBOMO (henceforth, IJA/ LOBOMO/IJA’S/ Ija’s Ija/ Lobomo’s) constructs narratives of artistic modernism, modernity and contemporaneity. Focusing on specific pictures I explore how the implantation of folkloric imagery implodes a shaping of artistic practice, production and discourse in art and history. Placing a reading of artworks as central to the interpretation of pictures, I explore IJA’s conscious engagement with historical memory inured in tradition as a recognition of creating space and naming the time experienced. Hence engaging that experience as folklore defines a worldview, Iwa. With picturesque metaphors and expressions IJA seizes what is directly lively and pulls it out of its obsessive twilight, in order to turn it into a palpable free-standing form.
