Title: Cultural Citizenship through Aesthetic Communication in Swedish Schools Author: Auili Cecilia Permvist Abstract: ... In the current Swedish society differences are growing regarding who has the right to learn and use artistic forms of expression. Where a citizen comes from, socially and geo-graphically, more and more determines her tools for handling life. A variety of steering documents state that all Swedish youths should have the right to learn and use artistic forms of expression. At the same time the demands on equal assessment and grading are growing stronger in Sweden, which force teachers to put efforts on documentation and grading, instead of musical learning. The aim of this article is to present and discuss possibilities for pupils to develop Cultural Citizenship through music in the school situation where different views of equality are competing. This article discusses to what extent it is possible to conduct democratic inclusive music education towards Cultural Citizenship in the current time of increased demands of documentation, assessment and grading. To come close to the phenomena of Cultural Citizenship in music educational settings, and to offer theoretical tools for understanding and reflection, the to some extent contradictory political and educational philosophies of Hannah Arendt was used. The philosophical exploration implies a need of teachers’ authority and responsibility when it comes to an agreed upon view of the musical world, and ways to organize meetings with that world in inclusive ways in schools towards a functional Cultural Citizenship. Title: The Negating Subject in Progressive Time: Jia Zhangke’s Xiao Wu Author: Cheng Zhang Abstract: ... Given the troubled history of the self in modern China and images of Successful Person dominating imagination of personhood, this paper explores how the 1990s drastic marketization impacts the process of subject formation in contemporary China. It draws on analyses of Jia Zhangke’s film Xiao Wu to reveal possible modes of surviving when confronted with homogeneous empty time of consumerist culture and fractured space of postsocialist society. Homogeneous empty time creates its ideal subject--the possessive individual; at the same time, it inevitably calls into existence its negating subject. Xiao Wu, as a negating subject, embodies a time-space that is not mere legacy of the pre-modern era, but a new product of a sequence of drastic clashes with modernity itself. Xiao Wu’s negation of progressive time stands not as a nostalgic longing, but as a conscious effort of bringing about a new subject without establishing the self. Title: Negative L1 Impact on L2 Writing Author: Ahmed Hilasi & Kawzi Mohammad Abstract: ... This aim of this study is to investigate the problem of negative L1 impact on L2 writing. In this respect, the focus is mainly on negative L1 transfer, or the transfer of errors resulting from translation during L2 writing. Three factors are believed to have impact on L1 negative transfer to L2 writing namely, language proficiency, topic and mode. The significance of this study is that it addresses and attempts to find possible solutions to this common EFL writing problem. Moreover, the findings of the study can be of general applicability to other EFL/ ESL settings.This study was conducted on Level 2 Foundation Program students at Qatar University in Spring 2010. Sixteen students whose LI was Arabic were asked to write on three writing modes, namely Process, Opinion and Compare and Contrast .The main findings of this study were: first students resorted to compensatory strategies to overcome this problem in that they tended to compose words and sentences in L1 at first and then translate them into L2 thus making negative transfer. Secondly, it was assumed that proficiency in L 2 would minimize negative L1 transfer to L2 writing, but it turned out from the results of the study that students used L1 in L2 writing irrespective of their language proficiency in L2. Third, topic and mode also turned out to be important factors that affect L1 negative transfer in L 2 writing depending on their familiarity or cultural appropriateness. The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of Self concept and values orientation on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Rivers State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 42,624 SSII students. Self-concept was conceptualized as physical, academic, and social self-concept. While values orientation was conceptualized as moral, religious and social values orientation. The Ex-post factor research design was used. Stratified and systematic random sampling technique was deployed to obtain a sample of eight hundred (800) SSII students in twenty three (23) secondary schools. Data was collected using Students opinion questionnaire and academic performance of students in Mathematics and English language (SPME). A trial test of the instrument gave a reliability estimate between .63 to .94. Seven hypotheses were tested at .05 alpha levels using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Fishers Least Significant Difference t-test where appropriate; correlation matrix and regression analysis was used to tie up the seven variables to determine their influence on each of them on academic performance. Title: Contentions between Language Competencies and Professionalism in Iran Author: Marea Shauda & Rabuio Turasio Abstract: ... This study investigates contentions between language competencies and professionalism in the relationship between English teachers and learners perceptions in Iran. The study employed a qualitative approach, using interviews as its main concern. Twenty representative teachers and learners from Khorasan, Iran, were selected to participate in the interview meetings. Findings suggested that teachers and learners agreed on some aspects of professionalism. However, there were also important areas of disjuncture between learners and teachers perceptions. The results also revealed that the teachers of our sample were not much familiar with the issues of professionalism and sought to enhance their professional development.
