The role of the data is really important in estimating the state of the economy, the accuracy of capital is needed to perform the projection so that the resulting value has a small bias and can be used as the basis for a policy to deal with future problems. This paper attempts to estimate the economic behavior of maize Indonesia by building economic models simultaneously and compare the estimation results with the estimated made by the government. Based on the estimation of the model constructed shows that there are similarities with the estimates of the value of government, however, based on the result of estimation indicate that the value is more detailed than the estimation made by the government. Title: Managing the Safety Requirements for Concrete Works Related to Jordanian Construction Projects using Expert Systems Author: Stephen Fahatni Abstract: ... Numerous investigations that had been conducted in Jordan to evaluate the safety management in carrying out construction projects revealed that the implementation of this item is relatively below the desired level. In this research, a specialized software (Expert System) was proposed to improve the current situation regarding the application of the right rules in safety management for concrete works related to Jordanian construction projects. The proposed system contains a lot of ideal terms, specifications, and standards for conducting an acceptable safety management and for getting rid of (or reducing) accidents and other types of risks inside the project site. As a conclusion derived from this research, Expert System is aimed at enhancing the existing situation regarding the safety management for construction projects, and therefore to keep the workers and other staff to be away from all kinds of public risks inside the construction project, and accordingly the proposed software is recommended to be adopted in following up the application of safety management procedures in construction sites. Title: Measurement of Defects and Exposure Condition Survey in Compressed Stabilized Earth Block Structures in Uganda Author: Linald Befason Abstract: ... Inadequate provision of shelter remains a global challenge. The high cost of building materials is responsible for this situation. The compressed and stabilised earth block (CSEB) has been promoted as a low cost material. While its other properties are well understood, the behaviour of the material over time has not been properly researched. The principal objective of this research was to investigate their in-service exposure and measure defects in a humid tropical environment. Such areas are characterised by extremes of weather. The soils are also varied. The paper examines the effects of natural exposure conditions on the deterioration of CSEBs. The methodology involved literature review, visual inspection, exposure condition survey, and measurement of defects. It was confirmed that premature deterioration was widespread in exposed structures, with visible defects. The paper recommends an urgent need for improvement in the production and use of CSEBs through dissemination of location specific appropriate specifications, standards and codes. It further proposes the need for improved protective measures in the humid tropics. Additional improvement can be achieved via better intergranular bonding, reduction in voids, lowered water absorption, and protective designs and specifications. Hence, future challenges can be prevented and the effects of identified deterioration agents minimised. Title: Using Electrical Resistivity Technique in the Sissala East District of Ghana to Locate Aquifers in Crystalline Granitic Rock Author: Bartels Hestus & Davis Mensah Abstract: ... Groundwater prospecting in the Sissala East District has been conducted using the electrical resistivity method. This has been done with the objective of locating suitable sites for borehole drilling and to determine groundwater potential of the district. The dipole-dipole technique of the electrical resistivity method was conducted using the McOhm 2119 resistivity meter in the horizontal profiling (HP) and vertical electrical sounding (VES) modes simultaneously. Geophysical data taken in both the HP and VES modes were presented in two dimensional (2-D) coloured vertical cross sections, from which VES curves were also plotted for selected station points and interpreted qualitatively. Results of the 2-D vertical cross sections and VES curves predicted an average depth range of groundwater or moisture interception of 10 to 15 m. The apparent resistivity of the wet boreholes was in the range of 15 Ωm and 300 Ωm. These were quantitatively confirmed with drill logs of the wet boreholes. The drill logs further showed that main aquifers and fractures were encountered between 20 m and 50 m depth range. The results yielded a success rate of about 89 %, thereby indicating that the district has a great potential for groundwater to meet their domestic and irrigation needs. Therefore, the dipole-dipole technique is effective in locating aquifers for groundwater in crystalline granitic rocks. Title: Analyzing the Map of Urban Encroachment in the Rivers around Dhaka City: An Example from the Turag River Author: Musa Gofata Abstract: ... Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is one of the fastest growing and the most densely populated cities in the world. The city has 4 rivers all around which were once lifelines to it for economy and ecology. Being expanded rapidly in an unplanned way with the phenomenal increase of population, land scarcity and land price, the city’s peripheral zone reached the banks of the rivers. Consequently, an ill-motivated section of people began to use the riverbanks in a variety of ways leading to river encroachment. Gradual encroachment is narrowing down the rivers putting their existence to threat. This study was conducted to find out the major encroachment points, estimate the area and document the land use of each encroachment point in the Turag River, particularly from the Buriganga Third Bridge (Shaheed Budhijibi Bridge) at Bashila to Tongi Bridge. The study was carried out through field survey with Dhaka City (rivers) map and GPS. The field survey was supported by discussion with focus group of 60 people aged over 70 experiencing changes in the Turag River for over last 50 years. Encroachment map showing the location of encroachment points has been prepared through application of GIS and satellite image. During field survey, the area and land use of each encroachment site was estimated and noted down respectively on sketch map. However, the study found out 51 points where about 1.5 acre of the riverbanks have been grabbed and are being used mainly for trade and commerce as well as housing purposes. Title: Qualitatively Evaluating Office Works and Laboratory Tests Related to Site Investigation Studies in Jordan Author: Tawi Al-Rabi (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This research aims at conducting evaluations for the quality of the office works and laboratory tests concerning site investigation studies for construction projects in Jordan. The applied methodology for this research comprises four phases. The first phase was focused on identifying factors, methods, and literature review of the international standards in implementing site investigations. The second phase was concentrated on designing a questionnaire regarding opinions in performing site investigations in Jordan (in accordance with the international standards), and then distributing it to several engineers and experts who work at site investigation offices. The next phase was the analysis of the collected data that resulted from the distributed questionnaire using SPSS Software. Whereas, the last phase of the methodology was focused on developing for guidelines and preparing for conclusions. Based on the analysis of the received data related to the distributed questionnaire, the results indicated that various factors may affect the quality of the office works and laboratory tests related to the intended investigations. In general, it was concluded that the most important factor of these was the lack of commitment with the requirements of the Jordanian Code of Site Investigation, in addition to the lack of commitment to carryout laboratory tests based on the latest standards (specifications). Also, site investigation reports were almost free of containing detailed descriptions of geological profiles that derived from boreholes. Furthermore, these reports contain very limited information regarding the existence of water table or other sources of ground water. Title: Using Dynamic System Approach Estimate Temperature Humidity Index Value Based on Green Open Space of Bogor City and CO2 Anthropogenic Emission Author: Faju Bonahi Abstract: ... Urban development in Bogor City has been responsible for the urban heat island effect and raised the air temperature. The main cause is the increasing of anthropogenic emission from fossil energy combustion and municipal solid waste treatment. On the other hand, the increasing of built up space and declining green open space also lead the increasing of the air temperature. Limited green open space reduced the capacity of environment to mitigate (purifying) itself. The purpose of this study was to: (i) estimate the minimum needs of green open space in accordance with its CO2 sink capacity, (ii) analyze possible policy to support green growth based development in Bogor City, and (iii) estimate CO2 emission and Temperature Humidity Index value in the future using dynamic system approach. The result of this research, especially the study of the conditions of urban heat island effect, indicated that Bogor city would experience the urban heat island effect where the value was higher than 270C in 2031. A Green scenario was developed using simulation is expected to be able to control urban heat island up to 2048. Moderate scenario has shown that the urban heat island effect will be experienced in 2039. Pessimistic scenario estimated that Bogor city would experience urban heat island effects in 2028. Title: The Opportunities and Challenges of Non-Revenue Water Management in Ghana Author: Cheng Pi Chang & Patrick Kofi Abstract: ... Management of water resources has become a major challenge in Ghana. Efforts to address the situation through serious water sector reforms have provided some improvements, with some serious challenges still persisting globally. This paper takes a view of water management systems in Ghana by focusing on some specific issues such as water production, water sales, total cost and their relationship with the non-revenue water (NRW). The paper adopts “correlation theory” of observations from 2003 to 2009 using Ministry of Water Resources Works and Housing, Ghana data. The findings reveal that, one major problem confronting water resources management in Ghana among others is lack of proper institutional structures and enforcement agencies. The study also revealed that total revenue and total cost of water provision have negative but moderate correlation with NRW but does not give any indication of how good this relationship might be. Again, it was found that where there are aspects of institutional structures, there are limited enforcement agencies for monitoring to ensure compliance. Title: Knowledge of Therapeutic Foods for Hypertensive Female Teachers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria Author: Asouzu, Ann Ifeoma (Ph.D) Abstract: ... The likelihood that adherence and choice of appropriate diet could boost the health, longevity, and immunity necessitated an investigation into the knowledge of therapeutic food for hypertensive female teachers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. A sample of 370 respondents (comprising 320 female senior secondary school teachers, and 45 nutritionists and 5 dieticians in tertiary educational and health institutions) in Port Harcourt participated in the study. A 30 item 2 experts validated four point rating scale instrument titled “Therapeutic Foods for Hypertensive Female Teachers Inventory” (TFHFTI), with a reliability coefficients of 0.758 was used for data collection analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research question 1-4, while multiple linear regression analysis was used to answer research question 4. The study revealed that: eating of alligator pepper, okra, beans, ukwa, ugba, okpa, pineapple, sour-sop among other high proteins and fibre foods including avoiding alcoholic drinks are proper dietary choices that reduced blood pressure and its associated complications like weight gain, cardiovascular diseases, etc. Also, it was found that promotion of proper dietary choices statistically (i.e. 61.4%) and significantly (i.e. < 0.05) contributed to the effective management of hypertension among female teachers in Port Harcourt. The study recommended among others that fruits and vegetables with high proteins, fibre, and potassium spiced with low salt should be correctly consumed in view of its nutritional and medicinal benefits in reducing BP. Alongside, adult females should avoid regular intake of cheese, margarine, beverages, sweets, chocolates and other sugar foods that induces obesity, blood sugar, cancer, diabetes, and high BP.
