Title: False Multicultural Representations in Post-Secondary Education Author: Peter Nils (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This is a conceptual paper to study the false multicultural representations in post-secondary education through French theorist Jean Baudrillard’s postmodernist perspective. This study reviews literature and summarizes the evidence that higher education institutions are complicit in creation of hyperreality through multicultural misrepresentations in relationship to educational inequalities. The evidence outlined in the paper is analyzed using the postmodernist critical framework. Postmodernism refers to an emerging social reality, and focuses on cultural rather than economic or structural features (Kando, 1996). The framework is appropriate for this inquiry because it allows the reader to understand societal symbolic exchange and simulacra in terms of a counterfeit democracy in higher education, specifically addressing multiculturalism. The findings of the paper include different levels of hyperreality in higher education observed through quantitative data misrepresentation, ideological reproduction in higher education, as viewed from a Critical Race Theory (CRT) perspective, and the elusive quest for justice in democratic educational practice. The literature supports the conclusion that to truly counter educational disparities, the we must remove the limiting boundaries of conventionally perceived reality. The paper ends with recommendations for future research on higher education diversity measurement reviews. These measures must either be tailored to specific multicultural contexts, or otherwise must be sufficiently robust to be applicable across populations of students, faculty, and researchers. Keywords: Multiculturalism, Critical Race Theory (CRT), Hyperreality. Show More |

Title: Waste Management Techniques Used by the Government in Manado City Trade and Reservation Center Author: Ambreem Uman Abstract: ... The strategy of urban development is very important to be defined in the policy. Some areas in Manado city at certain time are not clean from garbage. Wenang village which is the center of trade and services contributes the most waste even though the population is not too much. Sario Sub-district has a large population but produces little waste. It is necessary to learn how the waste management at the center of trade/services that densely populated so that hygiene can be overcome. The research methodology used is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by observation, direct interview with 3 informants for each Kelurahan (village) taken by purposive sampling. Data was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the waste management system and its management, cleaners and garbage vehicles cannot be optimized because the pile of waste is too much so that waste management must be different, that is by increasing the number of fleets from 1 vehicle to 2 or 3. Waste management on the road protocol is done by officers at 06.00am to 06.00pm. Garbage taken from the community is loaded into cart or waste motor taken to TPS. From TPS garbage was transported by garbage vehicle then taken to the landfill at 06.00pm s / d 06.00am. Title: Revisiting Environmental Conflict in Ogoniland: An Analysis of The UNEP Report Implementation and Nigerias International Image Author: Newman Emmanuel Ubani (PhD) Abstract: ... Since statehood in 1960, the national prestige being enjoyed by the Nigerian state has been a source of strength and advantage in her diplomatic relationships with both state and non-state actors within the contemporary Westphalian state system of 1648. Hitherto, Nigeria’s cognomen has been the “Giant of Africa or Africa’s Giant”, cognizant of her manifest political leadership role on the continent of Africa as well as the West African sub-region. This is in tandem with the expressly enunciated Afrocentric principle of Nigeria’s foreign policy. Unfortunately, Nigeria has now gradually lost her enviable national prestige and respected international posture due to several ethical crises of institutional leadership and public governance in the country. The extra-judicial killing of an internationally acclaimed environmentalist, late Ken Beeson Saro-Wiwa and his eight compatriots is one of the fallouts of such crisis. However, despite several international warnings on the Nigerian state under General Abacha’s military junta, she was still bent on the execution of the nine Ogoni activists for merely agitating for environmental justice which eventually made her a pariah state in the comity of sovereign nations. Against this backdrop, this research study is aimed at revisiting the issue of environmental conflict in Ogoniland vis-à-vis the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report in Ogoniland as well as the improvement of Nigeria’s international image. Furthermore, with the use of the resource curse theory, it argues that the abundant oil and gas resources of the Ogoni people have now become the bane of the agony of political marginalization, abject poverty, unprecedented underdevelopment, environmental degradation and conflict situations in Ogoniland. Finally, it is the position of this paper that the genuine and full implementation of UNEP’s recommendations in Ogoniland, will go a long way in improving Nigeria’s international image in the contemporary international system. Title: Migrant Ethnic Groups and the R?aka Indigenous Community in Ag?k?y? Author: Prof. F. E. Nafere & Racheal R. I. Abstract: ... The study investigated problems between migrant ethnic groups and the indigenous Agĩkũyũin Rũaka, Kĩambu County. After the construction of the Northern bypass, Rũaka opened up and this saw a number of investors coming into the area in large numbers to invest and some to settle. Migrants on the other hand, moved into Rũaka in a big way for reasons such as proximity to the City of Nairobi, family reunion and more viable commercialization. Having come from various socio-religio-cultural and economic backgrounds, the residents’ way of life was changed through their interactions with the migrants thereby giving rise to both positive and unpleasant challenges hence the main objective of the study: to investigate the arising problems between the host community and the migrants in Rũaka. A case study research design was employed and data was collected through documented sources, questionnaires and interviews. Similarly, Leonardo Boff’s and Clodovis Boff’s theory of mediation and Kasemann’s et al redaction criticism theory were used to help unearth the issues faced by the merged communities and to guide the study to give a liberating way forward. Some of the key problems identified by the study include environmental concern, insecurity, ethnicism, and intensive sexual immoralities, among others that the study has exposed and discussed. Among the recommendations is that the Church should insert herself more seriously within the diversified residents of Rũaka, in her capacity as the community of communities, in order to establish the root cause of the disturbing factors and act upon the findings in view of evangelizing fruitfully. Title: Enhancing Speaking Engagement in Working Adult Students via Role-Plays Author: Mai Trin (Ph.D) Abstract: ... Not participating in speaking activities is a common problem in the English as Foreign Language bachelor classes of the second degree of Cantho University, Vietnam, but according to Ur (1996) speaking seems to be the most important skills of all the four skills. Many of the students are middle-aged ones that are used to Grammar translation method in their past study. To solve this problem, I used ‘role- plays’ to create many situations for them to speak out. Twenty four students of the 16th Language Kiengiang course trained by Cantho University were selected. They were in the first semester of the first year with the subject, Communication 1, and almost all of them were at pre-intermediate level of listening and speaking skill. Most of them were in their 30s and 40s, and five of them were in their 20s and three in their 50s. Ten sessions were treated with ten types of activities of role-plays done in pairs, small groups, big groups and the whole class. With daily observation, interviews, a questionnaire the result was that ten role-plays helped the working adult students in their 20s-50s to participate in speaking English significantly. Although it was difficult for the 50s, they could fulfil their talk in a basic and short answers with the help of the teacher. The role-plays in pairs and small groups helped the weak students than the big group but the tasks of big group were more effective for good students. Therefore, I suggest that role-plays should be used in the working adult students. Keywords: EFL, role-plays, speaking activities, speaking ability. Show More |

Title: Migrants Remittances and its Development impact on Nigeria Between 2000 and 2010 Author: Ukegbu, Ezioinyinye Ebere, Phd, Clement Victoria Olabisi, Willes, Ngozi Emah & Tadese, Abisoye O. Abstract: ... Migration has always been viewed as portentous on the sending country. But this paper argues effectively that migrants’ remittances could be a veritable source of development for the sending country with particular reference to Nigeria. The discussion becomes pertinent in the realization that migration cannot be effectively controlled as migrants are willing to effect their migration at all costs. The discourse will consider the reasons people leave for other countries - such factors as political instability, better opportunities in the target countries, unemployment, among others. Data for the study were generated through the United Nation’s data for Nigeria of differing years, Nigeria’s immigration statistics, and Ministry of Finance data on annual returns from migrants. Analysis of the data revealed that the remittances to Nigeria is disproportionate to the number of immigrants. The study therefore suggests the following: The need to block all illegal routes of migration from the country; monitor liaison with the receiving countries in other to track immigrants’ remittances. Rather than making migration illegal or difficult, it should be encouraged and officially documented so that migrants could be tracked in their various countries of residence. The study discovered that when migrants’ remittances are accurately remitted and properly utilized it would positively affect both the sending and the receiving countries.
