Title: Etiology of Domestic Violence in Mauritius Author: Lent Keller Abstract: ... The Convention of the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and other international conferences on women have paved the way for providing for women rights as human rights thereby advancing the advocacy against domestic violence. However, the main explanation put forward to account for violence against women by feminist has been seriously challenged by family conflict researchers and some feminist researchers in the 1990’s. Women also perpetrate violence and the feminist paradigm by focusing exclusively on male violence has ignored female violence. The analysis of violence whereby women can be both a victim and a perpetrator has led to the emergence of the concept of intimate partner violence and several typologies have been constructed to analyze the dynamics of violence between intimate partners. These typologies allow researchers to fine tune their data collection tools, to develop more realistic theories, and design more effective intervention strategies. Title: Examination of Housing and Settlement Issues in Indonesia Author: Baidi Ahma Abstract: ... This work examines the issues of housing and settlement in Indonesia. Data were collected in March-April 2014 using the method: observation, interviews and focus group discussion. Data Analysis is using structural equation modeling analysis (SEM). The results showed that: (1) Serving Leadership has a significant effect on the government performance in the resettlement case. (2) The apparatus behavior has a significant effect on the government performance in the resettlement case (3) both serving leadership and apparatus behavior jointly affect to the service performance. The research implications are the application of serving leadership and the improvement of bureaucratic behavior which is very important to improve the government services performance in the resettlement case. Title: Environmental Adult Education for Environmentally-Friendly Methods of Crop Farming in Rivers State Author: Kpeno Amon Ephraim (Ph.D) Abstract: ... This study examines Environmental Adult Education for promoting environmentally-friendly methods of crop farming in Rivers State of Nigeria. A total population of 8453 crop farmers from three communities from the three senatorial districts of Rivers State were involved in the study. One research question and one null hypothesis guided the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted and accidental/convenience sampling technique was used to obtain a sample of 423 crop farmers among the target populations in Rivers State. The questionnaire was face and content validated by experts from the Department of Adult and Non-Formal Education and the Department of Measurement and Evaluation. A total reliability coefficient of 0.83 was obtained using Cronbachs Alpha method. The research question was analyzed using Mean Statistics, while the hypothesis was tested using independent t-test analysis. The result revealed that the environmentally-unfriendly methods of crop farming among the target populations are slash/burn practice and felling of all the trees on their farm land before planting among other things. Based on the findings from the study, there is no significant influence from the knowledge gained on the stoppage of the practices of environmentally-unfriendly methods of crop farming among the target populations. It was recommended among other things that staff of Rivers State Agricultural Development Programmes (RSADP) should be given environmental adult education to enable them have the knowledge to pass to the crop farmers in their areas of jurisdiction; in order to promote environmentally-friendly methods of crop farming among their clienteles. Title: Age and Academic Performance of Primary School Pupils in Rivers State, Nigeria, in English Language and Mathematics Author: Ibiye Omieibi-Davids Abstract: ... This study uses the ex-post-facto research design to examine the appropriateness and effect of age on academic performance of primary school children in Rivers State in English Language and Mathematics. Simple random and stratified sampling techniques were used to choose 498 Primary 4 pupils from 29 classes of 20 schools in 5 local government areas of Rivers state and their teachers. The English and Mathematics Competency Test (EMCT), a specially prepared test, was used to elicit data. The study had 3 research questions and 1 hypothesis. The research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation, while the hypothesis was tested with t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The result showed that there was the age of children in primary 4 ranged between 7 and 12 years; that a lot of the children did not meet the appropriate age for the class; but there was no significant influence of age on academic performance of primary 4 pupils in primary schools in Rivers State. This research focuses on effectiveness, efficiency and population database utilization strategy in public service by user institutions. The populations of this study are 32 (thirty-two) user institutions. It means all population is being use as sample. The study observes that the effectiveness and efficiency in using population database has significant correlation with the improvement of public services. Effectiveness in utilizing population database (X1) contributed 14.8%, while the efficiency in utilizing population database (X2) contributed 13,9% to variable quality of public serves (Y) respectively. It means that the more effective and efficient population database utilization, the higher improvement of public service quality. It assumes that “representations symbolize something; they are reflexive dimensions that can be both denunciative transparencies and preconceptions. Many of the representations that the media continues to (negatively and incompletely) perpetuate exemplify denunciative transparency: lungs of the world, exotic place, exploration potential, and no civilization, among others; which brings us to the following formulation: “One of the most practically applicable models for exploring how modern representation - be it linguistic or visual - functions is one that takes into consideration the system’s dual dimensions: a dimension of “transitivity” or denunciative transparency, in which each representation represents something, and a dimension of reflexivity or enunciative opacity, in which each representation presents itself as representing something” (CHARTIER apud MARIN, 1989, p.166-67). The article concludes that “Denunciative transparency is imbued with ideological, cultural and political structures. The media creates a certain interpretation of the landscape; however, this does not mean that different means of creating and interpreting local landscapes cannot exist and interact in opposition with each other”. This study is focused on the discriminatory attitude towards twin children among the Elele people of Ikwerre ethnic group. In Elele, the birth of children is the primary purpose of every marriage, as it is believed that children perpetuate the lineage thereby creating continuity of the families. However, the birth of twin is believed to be an aberration as they are not given the privilege to enjoy their socio-cultural cum religious rights as indigenes of the community because the people’s world view holds that it is only animals that gives birth in multiples hence, the assertion that multiple births such as twins are evil as well as a curse from the gods. It is against this background that this paper intends to investigate the discriminatory treatment towards twin children in Elele especially the socio-cultural and religious setting. In discussing this work, the ethno-historical approach was used while the qualitative method was applied in its analysis. The researcher discovered that twin children in Elele are denied certain traditional rites in their own fathers land. The paper therefore recommends that twin children be accepted as full-fledged members of the community as it will help to entrench a peaceful co-existence among the people.
