Title: Evaluating the Performance of Public Sector General Insurance Company in Bangladesh using Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC) as Case Study Author: Kassan Masir & Firoji Busshi Abstract: ... Effective performance evaluation increases the social benefits and enhances the accountability at the enterprise level. This paper evaluates the performance of Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC), the public sector general insurance company in Bangladesh, during the period 2007 to 2011. Both primary and secondary data have been used here. The study indicates that the overall performance of the enterprise had been more or less satisfactory during the period. The operational performances profitability, & activity had been satisfactory but the financial performances long-term solvency, liquidity and also productivity were not satisfactory. Finally the paper suggests that for further continuous growth and development, SBC should take strategic steps like, adoption of modern techniques for asset management, follow-up of modern marketing strategies, launching more research &development programs, develop HRD programmes, relaxing pricing rules etc. Key words: Liquidity, Activity, Solvency, Profitability, Productivity, Z score. Title: Promoting Industrial Growth and Labor Absorption in Gorontalo Province, Indonesia using the Marine Fisheries Sector Author: Kauyi Musi Abstract: ... The contribution of agriculture, service, industry, trade, and finance sectors have numerous impacts in improving economics in a certain region for example in Gorontalo province of Indonesia. With its excellent programs in the agricultural sector, particularly the fisheries sub-sector, it is expected that it could trigger the other service sectors, especially in labor and industry. In analyzing the level of production that is created from marine fisheries sector, there should be a change in final demand which can be developed through the analysis of output multiplier. By analyzing the output multiplier of marine fisheries, it can be seen how much the contribution of marine fisheries sector is in supporting economic growth in Gorontalo province. From the analysis of the labor coefficient, it is obtained that the marine fisheries sector contributes 0.1571. It means that in order to produce one Rupiah (Indonesian Currency) of output, it needs 0.1571 fisheries sector workforce. The higher the coefficient of the labor sector, the higher absorption of labor in the concerned sector is needed. High labor coefficient generally occur in labor-intensive sectors, while the low coefficient of labor generally occurs in capital-intensive production process sectors which are done by utilizing high technology. Title: Level of Exposure and Conservatism in the Annual Financial Statements in Service and Industrial Public Shareholding Companies listed in Amman Stock Exchange Author: Jomar Zadin & Parez Adgez Abstract: ... The study aimed to reveal the extent of compliance with a proposed index of disclosure in the financial statements by Jordanian public shareholding companies of service and industrial sectors listed in Amman Stock Exchange and to reveal the extent of the Jordanian companies’ compliance with the concept of conservatism (accounting conservatism) in their financial reports in addition to reveal the impact of accounting conservatism in the level of disclosure. To achieve the objectives of the study, an index of disclosure consisting of 105 items has been built and the financial reports of the companies listed in Amman Stock Exchange of the services and industry sectors have been reviewed to identify their compliance with the proposed index of disclosure. The level of conservatism in the companies’ financial reports was measured using two models: ratio of the firm’s book to market ratio and the accrual model. To test the hypotheses of the study, descriptive statistics, One Sample (T) test and a simple regression test were all used.The study revealed lack of full compliance with disclosure in presenting the financial statements according to the proposed index of disclosure in the service and industrial companies and at the sectorial level. The results also showed lack of compliance with concept of conservatism at the annual financial reports’ preparation process and lack of conservatism’s existence in the disclosure’s level in presenting the financial statements in the companies of service and industrial sectors and at the sectorial level. Based on these results, the study recommended the control’s parties to follow up the compliance with international accounting standards and the concept of conservatism which adds more reliability to the financial statements. Title: Privatization Challenge in the 21st Century: A Study of Privatized Companies Quoted at the Nairobi Security Exchange Author: Gilbert Mohovo, Gobovo Vikue & Sahmed Moho Abstract: ... The aim of this study was to analyse the profitability of companies privatized and quoted in the Nairobi Security Exchange. The research focused on those companies, which were recently privatized and were quoted at the Nairobi Security Exchange. Secondary data was collected and analysed from both published and unpublished reports. Published data mainly came from the financial reports of these companies, journals and prospectus. Unpublished data was obtained from research papers. Various ratios were computed for the companies five years before privatization and five years after privatization and the student’s t- distribution was used to determine whether there were significant differences in profitability before and after privatization. The general conclusion from the study shows that there were no significant changes in the profitability of companies before and after privatization. Title: Knowledge of Exclusive Breastfeeding among Female Bankers in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State Author: Samuel Gentle K. (Ph.D.) & Amadi Ahuruchi Abstract: ... This study examines the knowledge of female bankers on exclusive breastfeeding in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State. Four (4) research question and three (3) hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was adopted as the study design with total of 315 female bankers selected using Simple random sampling technique in Port Harcourt Metropolis. Disproportionate sampling technique was employed to select participants. Structured questionnaire was used to collect date for the study, of which 300 questionnaires were retrieved and used for analysis. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS (version 20) descriptive statistics and was used to analyze the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to answer research questions and test the null hypotheses. The result showed that 95% of the female bankers had very good knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding, as 241 (80.3%) had hospital as the source of information, 18 (6.0%) got their information from friends, 20 (6.7%) from mass media, and 21 (7.0%) from family members. The result from the responses on the meaning of Exclusive Breastfeeding revealed that 277 (92.3%) said that exclusive breastfeeding means giving baby breast milk only while 23 (7.7%) said exclusive breastfeeding is giving baby breast milk plus water. The PPMC results showing the relationship between educational status, religious affiliation, and marital status revealed a very weak negative relationship to their knowledge. It was concluded that the knowledge of female bankers in Port Harcourt metropolis was high with almost all knowing the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. Recommendations such as intensifying health awareness campaigns on exclusive breastfeeding and building more baby friendly centres in strategic places among others were made on how to better and increase their knowledge on exclusive breastfeeding. Unit Trust of India as India’s first mutual fund was set up as an effective vehicle for channelizing progressively larger share of household savings to productive investments in the corporate sector. In 1964, Unit Trust of India (UTI) came up with the first mutual fund Unit Scheme, 1964, popularly known as US 64 which was the first open ended balanced fund. But, during late nineties, UTI faces severe challenges with its unit scheme –US 64. At present, mutual funds have emerged as an important segment of financial market of India, especially as a result of the initiatives taken by the Government of India for resolving problems relating to UTI’s US-64. This paper tries to analyze the crisis faced by Unit Trust of India, specially its largest savings mobilization scheme-US64 and evaluate overall performance of UTI in terms of savings mobilization ,profitability, dividend distribution, income and expenditure pattern, investible funds, redemption and net inflow of funds. Title: Press TV Channel and its Media Functions in Reflecting Political Events in Iran Author: Afasah Mosirui Abstract: ... This study was to analyze the content of the news reported in network Press TV. It studied the reflection of political events in this network. The research was performed for highlighting and emphasizing the political functions of the media and political communication using content analysis. The choice of network news, news related to political events that represent the policy of the media network, is taken into consideration. The study samples included news about the political events in Press TV network. In this study, 141 reports were selected for content analysis in terms of indicators such as induced bias or impartiality, the value of news, news items, and other news sources were evaluated. According to the results, most of the news, with only one-sided and agreeing point of view in covering news related to Iran, reflected in a few cases. The viewpoints were one-sided in favor, and opposite views were covered too. Merely the reflection of the agreeing views will manifest the orientation of the news and shows the network as biased. Thus, it is suggested to avoid declining opposite views and to cover them in a professional way. This will not only make audience rely more on the news, but also will help the reports to be more effective and thus, it will be easier for the audience to accept the main theme of the network. This is a compendium of the entire object which seeks to examine the association between human resource management practices and employee selected outcomes within the organizations. Data were collected through questionnaire from 100 employees. SPSS-16 was used to analyze the collected data. In this study, descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression analysis have been applied to determine the contribution of each independent variable in human resource management practices within the organizations. The study shows that there is a significant relationship between independent and dependent variables. The result of the analysis revealed that HRM practices have a significant influence on employee selected outcomes like perceived organizational support, employee attitudes and behavior, affective and normative commitment and discretionary behavior within the organization. Furthermore, findings of this research paper emphasis on the presence and appearance of HR internal experts in the organizations which helps to achieve competitive advantage and improving organizational performance.
