Title: Increasing Job Satisfaction among Social Workers Author: David Parmer Abstract: ... Since the 1970’s, countless studies and questions have been asked on how job satisfaction can be fostered and maintained among social workers. As the current research remains minimal with regards to the promotion of job satisfaction of social workers, it is now time for the profession of social work to stand up and take notice in order to prepare social work leaders and practitioners, with the adequate tools to lead. This paper will suggest ways in which job satisfaction can be fostered and maintained amongst social workers, as well as key factors contributing to job satisfaction of social workers. Key leadership traits will also be discussed along with models and avenues which look to create job satisfaction. This paper will conclude by offering recommendations which offer proper action steps to be visited when looking to increase job satisfaction among social workers. Title: The Jezebel Spirit: A Case Study in Subversive Leadership Author: David Mavin & John Mavin Abstract: ... In this paper, we examine the Jezebel Spirit, a biblical example of subversive leadership and its implications for leaders of any organization. First, the historical explanation of the Jezebel Spirit is presented. This explanation is then applied to a case study conducted in a small rural protestant church in the Northwest, near the Canadian border. Using an instrument that measures emotional intelligence, the personalities of the pastor and the assistant pastor are compared and the elements of the Jezebel Spirit are revealed. Finally, the paper evaluates a possible example of the Jezebel Spirit in a corporate setting through an examination of the process behind the 1999 ousting of Jon Corzine as leader of Goldman Sachs. Title: Change Agents’ Orientations to Change: Experience from Pakistan Author: Kafzal Majik Abstract: ... In this article, I report on a qualitative study conducted in the rural, mountain district of Chitral, Pakistan. The study examined 5 Teacher Educators (TEs’) specific actions and methods (strategies) and their underlying assumptions and core values (orientations) of change in schools. These TEs work as change agents in the schools established by the Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan (AKES,P) in partnership with local communities. The TEs’ mandate from AKES,P insists that educational change and community development must go hand-in-hand. They therefore play a unique role as both educational reformers and community developers, stimulating change in schools on the one hand and in local communities on the other. The study’s findings captured three realms of the TEs’ world: a) the TEs’ evolving role as external change agents, b) their preferred strategies for change, and c) their conceptual underpinnings of change in schools. However, in this article, I discuss only one realm of the TEs’ world, i.e., their change orientations. I, therefore, first provide a brief portrayal of the TEs, revealing how their role is defined in the organization. I also describe the research methods employed in this study highlighting the research paradigm, inquiry question and theoretical framework, and research participants. Title: Influence of Academic Self-Concept on Academic Performance among Senior Secondary Schools Students in Rivers State, Nigeria Author: Gloria Mathew (Ph.D.), Iyagba Philemon Wokoma (Ph.D.) & Sunday Ogiri Rowland Abstract: ... The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of academic self-concept on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Rivers State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 42,624 SSII students. Self-concept was conceptualized as academic self-concept. The Ex-post factor research design was used. Stratified and systematic random sampling technique was deployed to obtain a sample of eight hundred (800) SSII students in twenty three (23) secondary schools. Data was collected using Students opinion questionnaire and academic performance of students in Mathematics and English language (SPME). A trial test of the instrument gave a reliability estimate between .63 to .94. Seven hypotheses were tested at .05 alpha levels using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Fishers Least Significant Difference t-test where appropriate. The results obtained showed that academic self-concept. It is necessary to improve the academic skills of students to engender academic self-concept, eliminate anxiety, increase the academic resilience of students in the school and motivate students to perform better and these should be the core counselling activity of the school counselors. Proper sleep length and quality are essential for physical and mental health and have found to be related to a variety of negative outcomes (Brown, Buboltz, &Soper, 2002). College is a time,a transition for individuals where they begin laying a foundation for their future and acquiring sufficient sleep is of great value. College students are recognized as one of the most sleep-deprived groups, but also, as one of the most technologically-oriented population. Due to this combination, college students’ sleep habits and mobile phone use habits have begun to receive attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep quality/length and mobile phone use among college students. Three hundred and fifty college students voluntarily participated by completing the Sleep Quality Index (SQI), The Sleep Habits Survey, the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale (MPPUS), the SMS Problem Use Scale (SMS-PUDQ) and the Mini IPIP. Results indicate that various aspects of mobile phone use such as problem mobile phone use, addictive text messaging, problematic texting, and pathological texting are related to sleep quality, but not sleep length. Additionally, extraverted individuals were found to engage in greater mobile phone use and problematic text messaging. Title: School Dropout and Educational Development in Orashi Region, Rivers State, Nigeria Author: Daminabo, Dagogo A. F. (Ph D.) Abstract: ... The likelihood that certain scourge could alter or shatter educational processes and subsequently impede educational advancement necessitated an investigation on school dropout and educational development in Orashi region, Rivers State. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised of all the 1150 teachers in the 68 junior secondary schools in the study area. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 300 junior secondary school teachers and a 30 item structured instrument, validated by two experts was used for the study with a title “School Dropout”. The obtained reliability coefficient of 0.762 justified its use to obtain data that were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that: absenteeism, truancy, non-participation in class/school work, inferiority complex or shyness, etc. were signs that culminate to high school dropout rate. This could be reduced through teacher-induced interventions like: providing emotional support for students who are facing some challenges, adopting waiving disciplinary actions incurred by students, etc. The study recommended among others that: teachers should be responsive and quick to identify and remediate issues like absenteeism, non-participation in class/school work, truancy, inferiority complex, etc. that could disillusion students and culminate to their dropping out of school. Alongside, Government should adopt inventions like emotionally supporting challenged students, etc. in order to stimulate their interest and facilitate the reentry into the school. Title: Teens Talking About Sexual Health: Girl-Directed Tools to Trigger Partner Communication Author: Katherine O. Cain, Sophia Karrillo & Rebecca J. Kundgren Abstract: ... Communication among adolescent partners about pregnancy risk, family planning and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been associated with lower risk of pregnancy and STIs, yet often youth do not talk about these topics and there is little research on what helps them initiate conversation. To trigger partner communication about sexual health, new educational materials were fashioned after teen magazine quizzes, then integrated into classroom education and clinic counseling. Focus groups and exit interviews with teens determined that exposure to these materials fostered partner communication. Most youth valued conversations about sex and risk-reduction behaviors, used the new materials more readily if they were girls or encouraged by a girlfriend, preferred select materials depending on perceived impact on their relationship, and were receptive to talking about partner communication with staff. Many girls described the materials as valuable tools, and staff continue using them to help teens increase partner communication about sexual health.
